Certificate III in Hairdressing students at SQIT recently were charged with the task of creating hairstyles based on a theme, and then preparing their models for a photography session. The Beauty and Hairdressing students teamed up with Certificate IV SQIT Photoimaging students to capture these unique approaches to hair fashions.
A frenetic morning was spent in the salon with hairdressing students working on their models to create their chosen style. Makeup for photography was considered and applied to match the theme. Then it was into the photo studio under the gaze of the camera lens and the ‘pop’ of electronic flash to create the portraits. Photoimaging teacher Doug Spowart commented that, “we’ve done this kind of cross-discipline project before but with our Diploma students – this time our year 1 certificate students were given the task of creating the studio portraits.” Photo teacher, Alison Ahlhaus, assisted with the lighting and, as a special visitor/assistant for the day, the 2011 SQIT Photoimaging student of the Year Lindsey Collier, worked with Alison and Doug to assist with the posing and design of the images.
Sheryl Dooley, the Certificate III Coordinator @ SQIT’s Hairdressing, Beauty and Massage team was excited by the collaboration. She congratulated the photo team for their ‘expertise and looking after our hairdressing students with their photo shoot. They had a great day … it is great working with such a professional team!’ The photoimaging team felt like-wise about working with them.
Ultimately all students an staff, through activities like this, emulate the excitement that comes from the opportunity to work at the highest level of creativity and professional practice of their respective disciplines.
The final part of the process is this exhibition and the graduation event for the Certificate III Hairdressing students which took place at Futures Restaurant on Wednesday 24th of October. Here are some of the student’s styles and images…
